Travel to Costa Rica for a Cheap Vacation
Posted in Costa Rica on Nov 13th, 2008
I know that the economy is putting a squeeze on many folks’ wallets. I also know that if we ever needed a vacation, this is the time. I’m feeling kind of beat. Work is always demanding and the news and the length and emotion of the presidential campaigns have just added to a general feeling of weariness. I need a to get away.
A trip to Europe is not in the cards at the moment but I’m lucky to live in Florida where Costa Rica is only a three hour flight away. I’m additionally lucky that the dollar is still strong down there. I can stay in quality digs for less than a hundred dollars a day and eat well for five dollars. The beer is cheap and nature is free.
You can spend money in Costa Rica if you want but you can also have a great time and not break the bank if you know where to go and where to look. Check out my archives for tips on saving money and getting the most out of Costa Rica.

Have a great weekend, I gave you a shout out on our blog!
MuchaCostaRica Round-Up
I came here because I read Marina’s post at MuchaCostaRica. It’s interesting to read other travel related blogs
Costa Rica sounds like a very interesting and beautiful country and you got me more curious of it than I were before. Of course, Marina has too.
I have a very looong “wish-list-to-go”, but I have to add Costa Rica somewhere on that list anyway
I’ve traveled a lot. I’ve been from LA to New York, Lisbon to Athens, Cairo to Capetown. Costa Rica is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. Its small but the terrain is incredibly diverse. In a few hours you can travel from a European style mountain setting to a sunny beach bordered by lush rain forest. There are volcanoes, white water rapids, caverns and a mind blowing variety of plants and animals. Costa Rica has 0.1% of the world’s landmass but has 5% of its biodiversity.
Costa Rica is unlike the countries that border it. Its a very special patch of land.
It also has no military. They’ve had over 60 years of peace. There is no guerrilla movement or drug cartel. Firearms are very controlled. Unfortunately the capitol of San Jose has become unsafe due to external factors. It’s not Mexico city dangerous but you have to be cautious.
Once you are out of San Jose you are among a population that has, for the most part, not known war, degrading poverty or extreme violence. There is a peace and a serenity in Costa Rica that I have found nowhere else.
Its not perfect. Property theft is an issue although its easily circumvented by taking some simple precautions. Its a give and take. You can’t leave anything in the car but you don’t have to worry about getting shot. Violence is not a part of the Tico culture.
